Apple and the iPad Infinite Loop

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend

Backstory: On Tuesday night of this week my SUV was broken into and my backpack (which was in the far back under the privacy screen) was taken. Inside that backpack was a Apple Macbook laptop, 3 Apple iPads, 2 Apple iPod touches, an Apple iPhone 2G, an Apple iPhone 3G, and an Android Dev Phone 2.

Yes this totally sucked. However it still doesn't suck as bad as dealing with Apple. The day after the vehicle burglary I ordered 2 new Apple iPads to replaces the ones that were owned by a company I was sub-contracting for.

This order was placed on Apr 14, 2010 at 10:29 AM PDT and was order number: W69536883. This morning I got an unrelated email from the Apple Developer Program which made me go take a look at this order. I get into the Apple Store Ordering System and notice this:

I'm like seriously? WTF? So I make the decision to give them a call. After a bit of a hold and after talking to 3 different individuals in regards to this I finally get ahold of someone who says they can help me. We place another order, (order number: W69602931) and I decide to also get 2 cases with them. Problem solved.

About an hour later I get a call back from Apple stating my order was once more canceled. I'm now getting a bit aggravated. I go to the online store and look up my order and sure as shit it's been canceled.

I call my apple contact back to ask him as to why this order was canceled. He then tells me that it's because I've already exceeded my "limit" of 2 iPads. At this point I tell him that no, while I had iPads stolen from me I hadn't purchased them, that I hadn't purchased any iPads using any mac account, and that this credit card had never been used to purchase any iPads.

He puts me on hold for a bit and after he returned he tells me that the shipping address has been used before. I tell him of course it has, it's a corporate address with more than 100 employees. He tells me that that's probably the reason and tells me that I'm going to have to get them at a Retail Apple Store.

Seriously Apple how fucked up can you guys really be? How hard is it to track and limit iPad orders based on the user accounts and not the fucking shipping address? As a matter of fact here's the past 90 days worth of orders from the user account:

No a single iPad successfully ordered yet I'm over the limit. Good job with the Microsoft math you bunch of cockstains.

Update: Just got an email from Apple containing the following:

Here is the quote for two 16GB WiFi models. I am in the process of trying to confirm if we can accommodate this request. I am sorry to hear about the units that were stolen from your vehicle.

We appreciate your patience. Either my associate or I will be able should be able to confirm the ability to place this order, likely within 48 hours. The iPad is a highly coveted device at this point and we want to do what we can to support your need.

Mind you this is from Apple's Business unit side of things. Not the consumer side. I love how they don't even know if they can even place the order.

Also PO'd

My IPAD 3G orders were also cancelled. I had no idea why so I called I called in and spoke to the "after sales" dept. They said my order was cancelled b/c the shipping address was the same used for an order placed a week earlier. I said yes, there are 7 people living in this house and my sister-in-law had ordered two although I didn't know if it was the 3g model or not, but regardless, the Apple limit says 2 per PERSON not per address/household. He said that if I wanted to place another order I could do so with ANOTHER address otherwise it would again be cancelled even though it was a different card, user id, billing etc being used. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!
