Mail.app imap-ssl workaround

I know this is old news but it took me awhile to locate this workaround and thought I'd share.

If you use a mail server with imap-ssl that doesn't have a verified certificate, you get a pop up complaining whenever you open mail. If you click show certificate, there's a certificate icon you can supposedly drag to the desktop and then use in keychain according to apple's support webpages. Well, dragging that image crashes Mail.app.

There is a workaround, if you have access to the certificate (say, you're friends with your sysadmin, which you should be, if you aren't friends with the sysadmin you can always run this from the terminal "openssl s_client -connect host:port" then cut and paste the cert into a file (e.g. "host.crt"):

Accepting a mailserver SSL certificate permanently
1) open Keychain Access (it's in "Utilities")
2) select the menu item: File--Add Keychain...
3) navigate to /System/Library/Keychains/
4) select X509Anchors and click 'Open'
5) close Keychain Access
6) copy the .pem certificate file from your server to your local machine.
7) open the finder and navigate to where you copied the file
8) double click it
9) import into X509Anchors
10) quit Keychain Access and restart Mail - it shouldn't ask for you to accept the certificate anymore

New Details about AO

In February Funcom announced that they were working on a new expansion pack to Anarchy Online called Alien Invasion. It looked like there was going to be some pretty cool content added like player built towns, player run shops, etc etc.

Well it sounds even better now. If you like AO or just want to know more go read the Interview with AO's Game Director Marius Enge over at IGN.

Paul Thurrott is an idiot

From his WinInfo Site:

"The moderate security flaw for MSN Messenger 6.1 and MSN Messenger 6.0 could let attackers view--but not change or download--files on the victim's computer. Microsoft will fix the flaw in an upcoming version of the Instant Messaging (IM) application the company plans to issue."

I know that Paul is just quoting the Microsoft Bulletin verbatim but as someone who calls himself a "technology reporter" he should actually grow some balls and mention that 'any flaw in any software application that allows an attacker to view any file on the target computer' is MORE that a moderate security flaw. What a fucktard. I find it amusing that he rails on OSX and Linux while preaching about how great Windows products are yet fails to mention any of their shortcomings. I use all 3 operating systems and while OSX is my favourite by far I'll criticize it if it's warranted.
